Starting a New Business in Downtown Peterborough?

There are many benefits and opportunities for locating your dream business in downtown Peterborough. If your business is located within the downtown business improvement area (the DBIA), the business is automatically a member. Small Business Support Services

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED) offers business support services and resources to those starting a new business as well as those with an existing business. PKED is the lead regional economic development agency for the City and County of Peterborough. The services and resources are offered free of charge in order to help startups and small businesses succeed. Community Futures Peterborough also offers finance, grant and other business services.

 

Downtown Money

Downtown Money is a “gift certificate” program where the money can be used at any participating businesses in Peterborough. Downtown money is available in denominations of $25 and $50 and can be purchased at the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area office, 313 Water Street, by cash, or credit card. If you receive the downtown money, call our office at 705-748-4774 and we will reimburse you with cash. Downtown money is often purchased by individuals, local businesses and government organizations to give to employees.

 

Security Camera Grant

We are offering our members a grant to help the cost of purchasing and installing security cameras. The grant will cover 50% of the project cost up to a project total of $1,500 ($750 grant). The purpose of this grant is to offer an alternative and cost-effective way to enhance the security of downtown with more cameras while also offering our members value-in protecting their assets. Events

We fund, support, partner and organize more than 20 major events in the downtown area such as the ReFrame Film Festival, Taste of Downtown, Ribfest, Peterborough Pulse, Hootenanny on Hunter Street, VegFest and Peterborough Pride. Many of our members participate in our events for free or at a small cost. Please contact us if you are interested in participating!

 

Garbage

Everyone plays an important role in keeping downtown welcoming and clean. For your garbage and recycling:

— Have your garbage bags to the curb after 5:00 pm and before 10:00 pm, TWICE A WEEK, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings

— Have your recycling bins to the curb after 5:00 pm, ONCE A WEEK, on Tuesday evening only. (Picked up at 6 am on Wednesday)

— Recycle bags (clear or blue) will not be accepted

— If your garbage or recycling has not been picked up, contact the City of Peterborough Waste Management Department at 705-742-7777 ext. 1657
