Downtown Peterborough has Free WiFi and an App

Free WiFi is now available downtown!

The Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area is pleased to announce phase one of our public outdoor wireless internet initiative. This service is for everyone who shops, dines, works, lives and enjoys our downtown.

To capitalize on our investments in digital technology, the DBIA is also launching a downtown app. Download it for free from the App Store or Google Play Store and find out what’s happening downtown and where to shop, eat, drink, play and stay.

The WiFi network is designed to be used outdoors to enhance the downtown experience. The first phase of the network covers some of the highest traffic areas downtown, including sections of Hunter, Charlotte and George streets.

To use the network, look for DowntownPTBO WiFi on your device. Selecting the network will bring you to our landing page where you can log in by agreeing to our terms of service. No password is necessary and it is 100% free to use.

“In 2014 we held a strategic planning session with our members and public WiFi was named as one of our top 5 priorities,” says Terry Guiel, DBIA Executive Director. “This network will be a big asset for our businesses as well as the patrons who support our local businesses.”

The network has been operating in various forms for the last two months as the DBIA has worked to set it up. Despite no public advertisement, we’ve already had 30,000 logins!

“The public has already shown that there’s a strong demand for free WiFi,” says Joel Wiebe, DBIA Communications Manager. “There’s a lot of excitement from our partners in the community and I look forward to working together to use this new asset to enhance the downtown experience and draw more visitors.”

This project would not be possible without the support of Community Futures Peterborough, Peterborough Utilities Group, and Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development.

“We know that offering public WiFi directly relates to people spending more time at that destination and generating more economic activity,” says Jeff Day, Executive Director of Community Futures Peterborough. “We’re pleased to support the DBIA to make this project a reality and enhance our downtown core.”

“Peterborough Utilities Group is pleased to be part of the Downtown WiFi project! We hope that visitors to the downtown core will find this service to be convenient and enhance the experience of their time spent in our downtown businesses and our city!” says David Whitehouse, Peterborough Utilities Group Vice-President Customer/Corporate Services and Conservation Officer.

“Access to public WiFi is becoming a priority for the business community as well as the thousands of tourists that visit Peterborough and the Kawarthas every year,” says Rhonda Keenan, Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development President and CEO. “Downtown Peterborough already has a lot to offer, but this will give visitors yet another reason to come and enjoy this beautiful city.”
